I just didn’t like this as much as I’d hoped I would.

It’s a gorgeous story of love and strength in relationships but I just couldn’t connect. I think if the story was written better I would have been able to get deep into this book. I loved the mother, the father and Andrius but I couldn’t connect with Lina and her brother which is probably the main reason I didn’t like this book as much as others.

The story also took a while to get into, I think I was at 200 pages before I felt like I wanted to keep going. I was ready to give up before hand as I was loosing all hope for the storyline.

I defiantly think there could have been more depth to this book but I understand why people love it that’s why I gave this a 3 stars!

I’m usually not one for historical fiction, but I loved it. Very reminiscent of reading The Book Thief, but about Russia and art instead of Germany and books. I really wish that the story felt more complete at the ending, with rescue or a glimpse into their lives afterward, but that’s not what this was written for. Between the epilogue and author’s note I felt like it still ended with a lot of hope and a beautiful call to remember history and the power of love in all situations.

I cried. I liked it. It was easy to read but quite emotional. It made me appreciate my family and everything I have even more.

I thought i'd get bored of this book easily but once i started reading it i couldn't put it down. It's one of the most powerful books i've read in awhile. It captures your heart and gives you hope. The history behind the book makes me appricate (once again) everything i have.

Their strength, courage, & kindness is  admirable. I love love mother and Jonas.
the only reason this didnt get a 5 stars is because at times i felt disconnected with the characters, other than that, i loved it.
