Meh. Definitely suffers from middle book in a trilogy syndrome--just lots of back and forth fighting.

enjoyed it a lot! thought it was definitely not as good as the first one partly bc the main things i liked about the first one was the relationships between inan & zélie, and amari & tzian but that wasn’t much of a focus in this one.
i thought the continuation of the story was good and i really like the world it is set in but it was no where near as good as the first one.
also quite confused about what actually happened at the end but i think there will be a 3rd one so excited for that!

I avoided reading this book for a long time because I thought it was going to be bad, but I was surprised, I actually really liked this book . I didn't expect it to be good, after 60 pages or so it got really interesting. I liked this book better than the first one because the plot wasn't as obvious. Even though I didn't like many of the characters , the storyline was good and there were three perspectives, which meant it was easier to understand the characters point of view. However, the ending was really random and shocking and confusing, it left me wondering what just happened and what was going to happen in the next book.

Still good writing (5 star worthy) but it seems like the author is milking a dead cow. Why is this a trilogy? Book one was so complete.

A really great piece of fantasy! And a powerful allegory for race relations. I gave four stars instead of five stars, because the limitations of the magic system were not well defined, there are some instances of Deus ex machina and the narrative sometimes skips a bit.
