Alastair Reynolds always writes engrossing space fiction. Everything here is very realized and pulls you in. It's a stand alone in this universe and I might have to try the other books

Engrossing, entertaining, and weird. Maybe just a little too weird for me. And a bit choppy. And possibly too long.

Edit: Revised up because very memorable!

Raises some interesting questions about identity, and about who one truly is when one doesn't remember who one truly is.

Lot of interesting ideas, but they are not the main story. The main story is about characters whose main background is killing. That makes the book hard to read, although the story unfolds nicely.
I believe it's required to read it to understand the following books in the redemption series though.

I just finished this book yesterday, and I really can't think of anything to say about it one way or the other. I enjoyed reading it and there wasn't anything inherently bad about it, but at the same time, nothing really stands out to me as being exceptional either. There were a few things that I thought I was going to get to complain about while I was reading it, but they were resolved during the story. I'm not entirely convinced that someone as psychotic as one character was could really become the somewhat decent person they did later in the story, but I guess you can make anything happen in fiction. So all in all an entertaining read that has lifted Reynolds a bit in my opinion since I wasn't a huge fan of the first book of his I read.

A most excellent book from Alastair Reynolds. Part detective, military, big idea type of book. The journey is every bit as interesting as the destination here.
SPOILER

As a matter of fact I enjoyed the grub story and things learned there as much as the rest of the book.
Good stuff!
