I'm not really sure how I feel about this? The stories within this book are interesting and I was drawn to them, but what is Hempel trying to say? Maybe she's trying to make the reader feel? ...I didn't hate it, but I'm left pondering so maybe this is what makes it great? It reads like non-fiction. I almost wanted to believe maybe this is a memoir, but it's not. This book feels like reading a Lana Del Rey song. I think that's the best way I can describe it.

This was my first Amy Hempel and she really is a master of the short story. I was impressed with how sparse the stories were and how much depth she was able to pack into them. I think I underlined just about half of this collection while reading! This was a quick read and it had me eager to check out her other stories.

I feel like this book was like a puzzle and each story (or sometimes even a part of a story) highlighted the beauty of a specific puzzle piece. The reason this book was not amazing for me was because in the end I hate a really hard time connecting the puzzle pieces together to make a picture. ,synergy that wasn’t the point, because the pieces in themselves are beautiful. However, I was left a little confused.

That story about the fucking dog kennel actually destroyed me. That's all I can really say.
