The person I suspected right from the start was not the killer! Oh, the last twist really got me. I loved the setting and I thought the story was very clever. The audiobook was amazing.

An unconventional Christie where there are plenty of bodies and not much of an investigation. Some of the characters are a bit weak here, but I haves side spot for this one. The story at times almost feels like a point and click adventure, where everything is told from Luke’s perspective and he has to catch any scrap of information he can get. Some of the characters are weak here, but I think Christie makes up for it with atmosphere, a twisty turny third act and a suspenseful denouement. The sense of suspense in this story is some of Christie’s best, and I can definitely see how she’s winding up for And then there were none, her next book.

Dragged a bit. Would probably have given three stars for the mystery, were it not for some of the unpleasantness that surfaces in Agatha’s earlier works in particular. The usual classism and amusing characterisation of anyone slightly left of centre as a communist. But also some quite overt homophobia in the form of a character described variably as ‘mincing’, a ‘Miss Nancy’, and as having ‘a nasty mind and nasty habits.’ At the end, the presiding detective intimates to our heroes that ‘something unpleasant’ awaits this character - despite the fact he wasn’t the murderer - in what’s apparently supposed to be a satisfying dénouement. Nice :|

Bit of a soap opera.

3.5 stars! An old lady is stressed and wants to go to Scotland Yard to let them know about the deaths in her village. She believes that a certain someone is murdering people. She tells her suspicions to Luke whom she shares the train with. Later on, she is hit by a car before she could talk to the police. Luke decides to go to her village to investigate the murders. Murder is easy as long as no one thinks it’s murder. Although I really like the plot, I wish that the characters had had a bit of more depth to them. Most of the characters in the village are merely there for the sake of it.

Listened to this on the way to and from Canada on vacation this year. It moved along very well, used Christie's expert knowledge of people (as always), and it wasn't until the near end that the culprit was apparent - always a surprise with Christie. The only reason for four stars rather than five is the love story part was a little trite.
