adrienne maree brown is deeply wise and inspiring. I revisit this book often so I can reconnect with the insights it gave me.

There are so many moments of brilliance and deep wisdom in this book. I'm grateful to have read it. But the organization is hard to track and important moments get lost amidst a lot of extra words.

“Time to close the gap between vision and practice. Time for those of us who seek justice and liberation to BE just and liberated, to be of this place fully.”
Ironically quite disorganised for a book on organising. Quotes often feel shoehorned. The same analogies are used to represent different things in different chapters, which can be a little confusing. That said, there are some nuggets of wisdom that I think make the book worthwhile.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend Emergent Strategy by itself but I can see myself including it in a list of recommendations for books on activism and social justice. It would pair well with Dean Spade’s Mutual Aid, for example.
CONTENT WARNINGS: some discussion of abuse, mentions of sexual assault, racism, ableism

If you’re struggling with how to “be the change” in our current world this book is an amazing guide!

i read this book for a class on facilitation but truly i was thankful for the excuse to finally pick this up. some found brown’s language to be “too flowery,” but that’s what i loved most about her writing. she breaks community care down into accessible concepts! a great read for anyone wanting to get more involved in their communities.

i really appreciate that adrienne focuses on the micro. often, all we can really do is make changes in our own really hyper local communities.
