While the mechanics of the story are somewhat amateurish in nature, the experience of reading the story as it unfolded was still a pleasant experience as long as you temper your expectations. The plot centers around a group of young elves invited to the capital of their kingdom
as a ruse to find out which of the young elves are magic users to be recruited to the kingdom's armies
. Inter-character conflicts arise as a conflict that threatens the kingdom becomes more apparent; old friendships are tested, new friendships begin to flourish, but who can exactly be trusted who blood begins to be spilled?

very cliche and predictable. by the midway point of the book, you know exactly how it’s going to end. the characters have absolutely no personality and don’t develop over the course of the book, and the romance is very insta-love and really makes no sense. i also didn’t like how the author alluded to problems but didn’t explain them for really long periods of time. like, why did it take so long to find out why zac was mad at petrer? also, zac’s anxiety over concealing his powers felt completely unfounded. his parents said he had to hide them and that was it??? he never showed them to anyone and experienced negative repercussions bc of it??? and the world building felt really shallow—there are all these references to other kingdoms and animal species and this druid war, but none of that really gets explained in any kind of significant detail. i feel like it could’ve benefitted from being 100 pages longer so the world and characters could’ve been fleshed out a bit better.
