Doesn't get better with time. This book was dense and dry even outside the educational setting. The endearing characters are swept aside, and the bland and tiresome brought to the forefront.

The first time I read Charles Dickens Great Expectations, I was in 3rd or 4th grade and it was a Great Illustrated Classic. I want to take a second to plug that series of books because it was awesome and now rereading the full version as an adult, I am really impressed by GIC's ability to take the story and keep most of the integrity of it for children.

That being said, turns out Charles Dickens is not my favorite writer, so Great Expectations will not be a favorite of mine. The book took me a long time to read partly because I'm busy reading other books for work but also because his writing style is exhausting! He throws so much details into each sentence you can't help but reread passages to make sure you understand what's going on. But because he was hell bent on giving you those details, he fleshed out very interesting characters. I loved Pip, flaws and all, and Joe. I really enjoyed the friendship between Pip and Herbert. And who wouldn't be fascinated by Miss Havisham and her situation?! The story had ebbs and flows for me but overall I enjoyed the progression of Pip from poor boy to gentlemen and then his discovery of his true benefactor.

I might have given 4 stars to this book if I hadn't been disappointed in the ending, it didn't really make sense!I've since read the alternate ending Dickens thought to end the story with originally along with an analysis of both endings. It is said that Dickens was advised to make the ending sound less bleak and that's why he didn't go with the original idea. I personally wish he had kept his original idea because I believe it went far better with the rest of the book. What I took from the novel was that life does not neatly give you all you deserve and maybe all great expectations are doomed. Regardless this is a well thought out novel that, despite the ending, deserves its classic status.

I’ve had this copy since my uni days but I never got around to reading it (I know, I know), also my first Dickens even though I’m an English grad. Listen, things will happen when they happen and I’m really enjoying this now.

Also what a fitting title to be reading at 36 weeks pregnant.
