I love this book about different families as a way to introduce the topic to children.

My two month old really enjoyed this. He’s pretty young so obviously the words don’t have much meaning yet but he lived the colour scheme, it completely captured his attention the entire way through (and this was the fourth book we had read in a row!). He was fighting his sleep so he could continue to look at this as I read.

I love the messages in this book and will forever read it to him as he grows up.

Todd Parr, The Family Book (Little, Brown, 2003)

Colorful illustrations and simple text make this one a winner with the little guy, though he does seem to prefer books with a storyline rather than this sort of simple list-of-attributes style book. Valuable lessons to be learned here, though, and Parr's illustrations are great at bringing points home (“All families are sad when they lose someone they love.”). I plan on digging into more of Todd Parr's stuff now to find out how good he can get when writing something story-based; this is good enough for the moment. *** ½
