Kindly written but you can kinda tell that this person is either not autistic themselves, or they've got a lot of baggage about it. Dividing the character's "Honesty stripe" (good) as something different from their "autism stripe" (implied to be bad or at least just to be endured), and advocating ABA in the "notes for caregivers at the back"? Yikes.

It's sweet and has a good message about all the aspects that make up a person, but also, yikes.

A little too didactic to be appreciated by older kids. Value for helping kids understand the perspective of kids with autism.

I don't really know where to begin with this book. It was a cute story, but calling it a book for children with autism is a stretch. I think if the author had left out autism and covered just differences in general, it may have been a little bit better. I did like the concept of each stripe being different and all the stripes (differences) come together to make the zebra a whole. But again, this can be said about every child whether neurotypical or not. It was not my favorite book about autism in children.

Cute idea, but most autistic children I know would find this heavily-metaphor-based book more annoying than affirming. It didn't seem to really be for an autistic reader at all.

SUCH a cute story! Very relatable for all children and their differences, but it would also help younger children realize that some things are not easy for those with autism. All schools should have this!

Two books in one, this book contains a story about Zane, a zebra with autism who laments to his mother about all the things that go wrong one day at school and she reassures him that although he is autistic, which is why he had sensory problems, communication problems and more, he also has some wonderful qualities and is a whole person, not just his autism. The back of the book has a guide for parents and caregivers explaining the story and autism and gives information about autism.

My heart!!! I am so in love with this book. As someone who previously worked in special ed and has dealt with autism first-hand, the authors have done a beautiful job of truly depicting what it's like. Zane, just like all kids with autism, just wants to be accepted. The book illustrates some of the quirky aspects of autism that also sheds light on why it makes Zane unique! Such a cute story that I will definitely be sharing.
