Oh wow I don’t really know how to rate this. It took me a month to read this and I found the first half of the book quite slow. However, Kingsolver’s writing is beautiful as always and I have tons of highlighted quotes. The subject matter is quite interesting once you get to the meat of it. Kingsolver’s foray into McCarthyism was startling and saddening. It’s a subject matter I didn’t know too much about, and its themes of anti-intellectualism, nationalism, and fake news is the frightening legacy of modern day America. As usual, Kingsolver approaches historical fiction in an informative, interesting way that has modern day appeal. If I were to just rate the second half of this book, I would give it five, but the first half of the book, while well-written (& I enjoyed the portrayal of Frida Khalo), I would only give a 3 due to the slow pace.
