This was an eye opening account of a what happened in Nanking. I had only recently heard of the events after reading a fantasy novel that had a scene inspired by what happened here. This book is brutal and heartbreaking, but absolutely necessary.

This was a tough listen. Chang goes into intense detail that often left me nauseous. I felt a wide range of emotions listening to this. I love her writing style, it is accessible, strong, and concise. The testimonials and statistics had my jaw to the floor. What I loved about this book was how it had me putting it down every 5 mins to go look up something it referenced. I’ve been reading all the acclaim and criticism this book has received. I don’t care whether Chang was writing as an activist or a historian, I’m giving it a 5 regardless.
