Elegant writing, complex (if not fully likeable) characters and a plot that kept me guessing. Raises interesting questions about truth and what we owe ourselves/our partners/our children.

Beautifully written book that delves into the personalities of both women. They're definitely flawed which feels real. The story doesn't end with a concrete explanation of what happens after, but I love the way it mirrors how Cassie told Lore's story as well.

For those saying it was a bit long, I'd suggest the audio book. I can see where it definitely could have been trimmed, but the narrators are fantastic and really keep the story alive throughout the entire thing. It also helps with the comprehension of Spanish throughout the book. Even with my minimal knowledge, I was able to pick up on enough context to understand.

The writing is good, and really better than three stars. However, there are a few oddly specific details that don’t add up, such as (no spoilers) that Lore recalls the emotion Cassie’s Texas Monthly piece on the UT shooting sparked…which would seem to be referring to an actual TM feature written by the renowned Pamela Colloff. Or that a character enters the hospital room of a dead family member and no one on staff has alerted them, when at the very least, there would be a prominent sign on the door noting “Please see nurse before entering room.” For a book that has so many wonderfully specific and rich descriptions, the two mentioned above succeeded in taking me completely out of the narrative.

I really did enjoy the originality of the story and its twists, but the book could have used at least another round of edits to prevent sloppy mistakes like the ones listed above.

The concept was interesting, and I appreciate the author's portrayal of women as having multifaceted identities (as mothers, daughters, professionals, lovers) that can be complementary and also conflicting. But it is a long book in which the story unfolds slowly with lots of scenes that repeat what's already been established. The characters and their actions often felt more contrived to meet the needs of the plot rather than what real humans would believably do in the same situation.

Great exploration on a few fronts, women as complex individuals with needs that one mate may not meet, how our pasts influence our choices moving forward, how to make peace with the hand we're dealt. Enjoyed the exploration of the sacrifices parents make for their children and selfish choices they make for themselves. I liked the characters, the plot, the progression of the story. Didn't like the Spanish words & phrases were sometimes easy to determine, based on context, but some were not and I didn't want to stop reading to Google what they meant.
