A review of this from me would be mediocre in comparison to the enjoyment I got out of it. I am no expert in medieval history, but I have long been fascinated with it. The combination of history and folklore made this book series a pleasure and delight, despite my having little knowledge of either Russian history or its folklore. I appreciate being able to walk away from it with slightly more knowledge than before I walked into this lush world of Tatars and boyars, chyerti, and crazed priests.

not the biggest fan of the characters, but the setting itself is rich and lush.

Great ending to this trilogy. I enjoyed the Russian fairy tales and the weaving of historic battles.
I will revisit this to read again in the future.

Burdened by a sense of responsibility to save Russia and the magic within it, Vasya makes continued sacrifices to lessen the tragic impacts of war in Katherine Arden's The Winter of the Witch.

As Moscow lays in ruins in the aftermath of a deadly fire, the people seek to place blame upon something, or someone, they can rage against, which is unfortunate for Vasya. Spurned on by Father Konstantin, the people prepare to burn Vasya for being not only a witch, but the one who brought this suffering upon them. As they burn her, Vasya is able to escape unseen, leaving the mob to believe they have won as the Grand Prince of Moscow forges forward with his plans for war against his enemies. With Vasya traversing the magical realm of Midnight, she learns far more about herself the power that runs through her family while also revealing more truths of Morozko and his twin the Bear. Burdened by the weight of the fates of the magical world and that of Russia, Vasya is determined to save as much of both as she's able.

Continuing the narrative and maintaining the feel of the well-developed world first presented in The Bear and the Nightingale and furthered in The Girl in the Tower, this installment draws the various elements of Vasya's family and their abilities together in a dramatic and explosive way. Throughout this series Vasya has demonstrated growth in her character as evidenced through her actions, but her growth within this novel was extraordinary as she recognizes the darkness within her and tries not to fully give in to it. Though much of this installment follows Vasya's journeys from place to place, which has the potential of slowing the story's pace, there is plenty of action strewn throughout to keep the narrative's momentum moving as it progresses closer to its conclusion. As the expansive story comes to its close there were a few moments where the narrative had smaller resolutions that felt like a more natural end, creating a feeling of a slightly stuttering stop as the narrative in its entirety was finally resolved.
