Epic world building. Love the elaborate plans for revenge, the small elements of friendship and hope. Team Rowan.

While the writing of Queen of Shadows isn't the best quality YA I've ever read, it's full of lovable characters, action, and plot twists that made it hard not to read it all in one sitting! I can't wait to see what's next in the Throne of Glass series

This is definitely the best book of the series audio wise so far. The pace is great; there's always enough going on to keep you engaged, and then the moments of action and tension are heightened by the limitations of the speed the narrator can read at - it just draws everything out that little bit longer so you can really feel the build.

Similarly, despite the number of threads that make up this story and the sheer volume of characters that have roles to play, the audio manages to make everything that much more memorable so it's still easy to follow. Again, I do think the graphic audio (when it eventually arrives) will do an even better job, but for now this really does stand up.

For some reason the quality of this audio did sound slightly different to the previous books in the series, especially at the beginning. Either I got used to it and stopped noticing as the book progressed or it's just a glitch at the start, but there are moments early on where it sounds a bit like a knock-off recording. And while Elizabeth Evans is great as always, her vocal repertoire is getting severely stretched by this point and, with many more characters due to appear in the remaining books, I am concerned that discerning between different character voices is going to become difficult and the quality may be affected. Likewise, there were a few slightly odd timing/editing choices in this book - breaks where there needn't be and vice versa. Nothing that is severely going to hamper your enjoyment, but just little things that don't quite sound right.

If anyone has figured out how to do the tandem of the next two books on audio without simply having to remember the switch points, please let me know!!!

Felt like the pacing was a bit off and that some of the character arcs changed a bit too fast in a short number of chapters to really be able to take in the change for the direction the story was going in.

So good, I can’t even describe it. So much happened in this book and there were so chapter cliffhangers that wrecked me so much. Even though it didn’t have a huge cliffhanger at the end I wanted to start the next book(s) asap to continue the story because I love these characters (except maybe Chaol still, I hold a grudge hehe).

I love how much the world expands with each book in this series. It also got a lot darker than I was expecting, but maybe I should have guessed as the first book is about an assassin. I also think the author does a great job of making even the side characters three dimensional with complex motives even when I don’t like them as people. But they are so realistic in their internal and external conflicts. Definitely will keep reading the series.

This is the first book in the series where I found myself caring for Aelin.

I only started tolerating her about halfway through Heir of Fire - the only thing that kept me reading the first two books is that the side characters were way more interesting than she was. (And yes, I did read Assassin's Blade - and it made my already-dim view of her even worse, oops.)

These "side characters" are starting to become full-fledged characters in this book. It's clear that Aelin is still supposed to be the main character, but Aedion (I know I'm not spelling that correctly), Rowan, Lysandra, and so on are growing on me much faster than our supposed main character did. I am ALL for seeing a full novel from Lysandra's point of view. I know I'm setting myself up for heartbreak, but if Lysandra dies, I'm rioting.

This book wraps up with what seemed to be the end of the story - yes, there are a few unknowns, but I was not expecting there to still be THREE MORE BOOKS LEFT. That leaves a lot of time for people to die/for things to go wrong.
