adventurous lighthearted sad medium-paced

3.5

interesting collection of short stories and fun gifts to go along with them. my favorite stories were: Weave the Wind to Silence, Fear of Flying, Full-Scale at the Center of the Universe, Wellingsgate House for Retired Ghosts

Spoilerthis book was under edited, both from a formatting point of view (punctuation errors, indentation errors, etc) but i also felt some of the stories could have used more guidance (pov shifts, inconsistent themes, etc).

wasn't sure what the theme of the book was. it felt like winter and the magic/power of books was a theme, and most stories fell into one or both of these. however, some stories weren't in either and i couldn't see why they were included except to get to the magic "12" stories. this also felt like it should have been a light-hearted collection, but you start with a story about a dead mother and continue with more dead family (another mother, grandfather, spouse...)  and that sense of grief.

some of the stories were great, some only okay, some i didn't care for, but i think the greatest disservice was the lack of editing and the need for a more consistent, light-hearted theme
