The verseform didn't quite work for me but other than that, great book. Heartbreaking but that was to be expected.

What a beautiful book. Rena is a young Indian American girl just entering her teenage years. She feels that her life is divided into two worlds, that of her Indian family and friends and that of her American school and friends.
While reja struggles to be the dutiful daughter her parents deserve she still longs for fitting in with her classmates.
I loved how you could feel the love and devotion that reja and her family feel for each other, in beautiful poetry. When Rena’s mom becomes sick, family and friends swoop in to help and reja wants desperately to be her moms hero.
Though this book had me in tears, it was a complete joy to read and will stay with me for a long time.

I read this in one sitting. So beautiful and warm. I didn’t know much of what to expect—I picked it up based on an indie magazine recommendation. Normally I feel pretty meh about books written in verse, but this is the first one I’ve read where it really felt like the author used the verses with a Purpose. Gorgeous writing with extended metaphors about the different worlds we live in. Definitely cried. I cared about all of the characters involved and found myself being able to imagine being inside each of the moments that the author wrote about. Buy the book and read it❣️

3.5 stars, maybe 4. This is a touching and heart wrenching story of a young girl caught between two cultures. There is much for students to relate to, whether they are caught between two cultures of not.
