Alexandra Vasti really pulled this off. This is a fantastic historical romance. The writing style is beautiful. The characters are charming and intriguing. The plot is interesting and suspenseful. The romance was genuine. There are many hot and spicy scenes. The spicy scenes never felt like they were getting in the way of the plot or the character development. I had such a great time listening to this audiobook, I am eager to read more from this series!

I'm so delighted Alexandra Vasti is now writing full-length books. I fell in love with her writing through the Halifax Hellions novellas, and seeing her transition into a full-length series set-up is so exciting. This hit all the right notes - a guardianship conflict that feels realistic (and doesn't overly rely on child drama), a newly minted (American) Duke with radical politics, entrepreneurial heroine (running a salacious lending library), near-miss ruination (gasp!), and pining-while-married. This is fairly low angst, with most of the conflict operating outside the couple, and features several absolutely delicious open-door scenes that feel Just Right for these characters. I particularly enjoyed a few of the plot twists that set up future books in the series and can't wait to see these characters get their own happily-ever-afters.
Come for the spicy regency comedy and stay for the author's note, because as always, Vasti evidences how deeply researched and historically authentic these characters are - a great reminder that there have always been women clawing their way to self-determination with the tools available to them, and feminism is not anachronistic.

Vasti’s full-length debut is sure to delight Halifax Hellions fans. I loved the main characters in this: Selina, the serious, type A, get it done person and Peter, a bit of a chaos demon but exactly the type of sunshine that Selina needed. I enjoyed the discussions of politics and the large cast of characters in this book, who brought a wide variety of experiences and ethnicities to the table. Loved that Peter was from New Orleans! It’s not every day you get to read about an American duke. Lol.

I absolutely loved this book. I have only a handful of historical romance authors that are on my I-will-read-anything-they-write list, but Vasti has been on it since I read her Halifax Hellions novellas, and I was so lucky to win an ARC of this book in a giveaway. I purposely waited to read this book until I had a free evening, because I knew that once I started reading I would not want to put it down. It did not disappoint, and I read it in one sitting. Although this book dealt with themes of grief and healing, I loved what a hopeful and uplifting book it was. Peter, Selena, and so many of the other characters were so desperately trying to do what they felt was best for others, even at their own detriment, and made me think about how I want to live in a world where people are, at there core, good. I loved the found family aspects of the story, and I am a sucker for the inclusion of some animals— this book has a dog and a cat.
