A rather charming take that explores Jody Tiflin's life and transformative experiences such as his relationship with his grandfather and the death of his pony Galiban; the book is split into four parts to highlight this. Characters like Carl and Billy Buck are father figures to Jody, yet occasionally disagree on what is best for him. Alongside this, Steinbeck uses The Red Pony to highlight the harshness of the world and portray Jody himself as a mischievous figure who often overlooks the death of smaller creatures compared to his horses which could be Steinbeck using this as a criticism for the violence in the real world. Overall however it perfectly displays a farm lifestyle and allows the reader to live out life through Jody's shoes and experience all the great joys, as well as the faults in his life.

Was the writing good? Yes, of course. Am I glad that I read it? Not really. There are a few images I don’t think I’ll ever be able to shake.

This is a story about a boy growing up in 1930s California, told in four loosely-connected parts. There is sadness and cruelty but it's ultimately hopeful. The bantam edition also contains the short story "Junius Maltby," which is a whimsical complement to The Red Pony.
