NOTE: I don’t give ratings on content of memoirs but rather on writing and narration style.

I started listening to this one in 2023 and finished it up just a few days ago so it’s also my first audiobook of 2024. I’ll be honest with you guys, I didn’t know much about Minka’s early life before listening to this, but I’m a huge fan of Friday Night Lights and I also enjoyed her appearance on Titans as well.

This was such a powerful and raw memoir, and a heartbreaking look into her life growing up. In a lot of ways, this reminded me of Jeanette McCurdy’s memoir (also a favorite of mine) because it dives into the complicated relationship between her and her mother. If you’re looking for a juicy tell-all book about her acting career, this isn’t that kind of book. This was an honest and introspective recount of events in her life that shaped her into the woman she is today. You can tell she’s done a lot of work to overcome her childhood trauma and I commend her for the amount of vulnerability and honesty in this book, and certain chapters had my jaw dropping. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook version because her narration adds an extra layer of nuance that just tugs at your heartstrings.

This memoir is deeply emotional and moving. Minka is very open and vulnerable when sharing her childhood and early adulthood traumas. I do wish readers were able to get more insight about her time on Friday Night Lights. I recommend this book for fans of I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy.

Let me start off by saying that if you’re interested in hearing about Minka’s experience on Friday Night Lights, you’ll be disappointed. It’s talked about but takes a backseat to everything else. Instead, though, you’ll get a very powerful retelling of Minka’s life. It feels weird to say, “If you like books like XYZ” in terms of memoirs and autobiographies, as these are the accounts of people’s lives, but the writing feels very authentic to the author in the same way that I’m Glad My Mom Died did. The books are equally powerful, too. In this case, I listened to the audiobook, and it was even more powerful to hear Minka tell her story.

Like many, I knew Minka as Lyla Garrity, and never could have imagined the events that happened in her life leading to that point. We get so wrapped up in the glitz and glamour of film and TV stars that we don’t think things could have been so bad for them as they sought stardom. These days, we continue to learn more and more just how much that is not the case.

I’m glad that Minka spoke about the therapy and treatments she has gone through, including ketamine treatment and EMDR. Having gone through EMDR myself, I know how powerful a tool it can be for trauma. I can also admire the place she has gotten to now with viewing her mom and everything that happened; looking back at events like that with love and empathy might seem appalling to some, but multiple truths can coexist. Acknowledging that people are doing the best they can with what they’ve been given can allow us to heal.

I personally enjoyed the way this was written, though I felt sometimes like a certain spot was getting repetitive. Choosing the audiobook was truly the right choice and the way I would recommend it to anyone.

This book was incredibly impactful - so impactful that I started sobbing, closed it, and made a therapy appointment before continuing to read. It forced me to come to terms with some unresolved childhood trauma that I have yet to explore and opened my eyes to how important it is to heal your inner child. Easily in my top 5. An incredible story, yet so devastating. It can, however, be very triggering for anyone who has experience with physical/emotional abuse and sexual assault.
