Wow this was so impactful heartbreaking, and intense. Minka's life, her story and her heart was such a beautiful and intense experience. Robin was a light at the end of the experience. Minka's journey from being a child in such an unstable space and her teen years going into her adult life. Learning how she went into her medical and then her acting career left me mind blown and emotional. My heart went out to Minka throughout her entire life, now in my 20's I related to her uncertainty about adulthood and the joy of independence. But also redefining love. Minka's complex relationship with her mom, friends, men, and most importantly herself was so intense and layered. When she started going into nursing and acting my heart glowed for her.

🌙 Lines That Stayed With Me 🌙
"It was as if none of that ever happened. What mattered was now."

"Senstive people will change the world. The rest don't give a damn."

"She never judged me. But saw me and loved me. And I felt it."

"You were quiet. I could take you anywhere."

"I loved nothing more than a beautiful girl who could kick your ass."

"Even though we thought we were following a different path than our parents. We are unknowingly following their path the whole time"

"Ever the fearless little girl."

"I didn't understand. Parents sounded interchangeable."

"How does a 9 year old learn to parent herself? She figures it out."

"Alas, it's taken my years to see there's a downside too."

"I respected him out of fear. I learned these lessons fast."

I enjoyed watching minka on Friday Night lights, so it was fascinating to learn more about her. I had no idea that her childhood was so tumultuous. This was not an easy book to listen to, but I definitely felt it was worth it. Minka does an excellent job at excavating her past and presenting it in a coherent and emotional manner. This was so much more than just a timeline of her childhood trauma, it was also clearly a journey of healing. I am a very nosy person and I enjoy getting to learn the inner workings of other people. This book was a fascinating and eye-opening read.

NOTE: I don’t give ratings on content of memoirs but rather on writing and narration style.

I started listening to this one in 2023 and finished it up just a few days ago so it’s also my first audiobook of 2024. I’ll be honest with you guys, I didn’t know much about Minka’s early life before listening to this, but I’m a huge fan of Friday Night Lights and I also enjoyed her appearance on Titans as well.

This was such a powerful and raw memoir, and a heartbreaking look into her life growing up. In a lot of ways, this reminded me of Jeanette McCurdy’s memoir (also a favorite of mine) because it dives into the complicated relationship between her and her mother. If you’re looking for a juicy tell-all book about her acting career, this isn’t that kind of book. This was an honest and introspective recount of events in her life that shaped her into the woman she is today. You can tell she’s done a lot of work to overcome her childhood trauma and I commend her for the amount of vulnerability and honesty in this book, and certain chapters had my jaw dropping. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook version because her narration adds an extra layer of nuance that just tugs at your heartstrings.
