Although this book was unbearable at times due to the whiny nature of the main character Werther, I couldn’t help but sympathize with the pain that his destiny brought upon him. It’s truly tragic, which is why I feel like I have to appreciate it for what it is.

Still beautiful and heartwrenching. Like with love, it's hard to say something original about it. Go read it if you somehow haven't already.

This was one I'd heard so much about but was not stirred by. It had serious affective power over its original reading audience, but I wasn't as drawn in as I'd hoped to be. I wonder if the problem is in the translation. I read it in about two hours on the train many years ago and oddly enough I still want to read it and find it moving, but don't know if I ever will. I have such a respect for Goethe's place in Romanticism (and was thoroughly charmed by his house in Frankfurt, especially the attached galleries), yet saddened by how little one of his most famous novels did for me.

Worst book I've ever read in my entire life. I hesitate to give books a rating below 2 stars and rarely give them 1 star reviews, but this book does not even deserve one measly star.
(There is a reason Goethe himself distance himself from this book in his later years.)
In short, it's a glorified description of depression and suicide. You know all those edgy self harm memes depressed teens post on social media? It's that, just hundreds of pages of it.
As someone who has suffered from depression and suicidal idealization myself, this book was literal torture to read in high school.
Absolutely glorified trash. I am against book burning of any kind, because there is something you can learn from reading bad books as well, but nothing at all would be lost, if The Sorrows of Young Werther was just snapped out of existence from one moment to the next.

Jedna z mých oblíbených klasik.
Kniha o bolesti na duši, beznaději a nešťastné lásce. Určitě ale není pro každého. Člověk v sobě musí mít aspoň kapku melancholie, aby příběh dokázal ocenit.
