A very sympathetic portrayal of an intelligent woman making the wrong decisions. The power of emotion is presence throughout but never belittled, dismissed as unimportant, or worshiped.

Caroline O'Donoghue is one of my favourite podcasters - School for Dumb Women and Sentimental Garbage have been making me laugh and feel seen for years now. Promising Young Women is slightly darker in tone than I was expecting but felt like such an accurate portal into life as a twenty-something - the breakups, the terrible choices you make about relationships, the transient housemates, the pendulum between brilliance and boredom as you build your career. The only thing I didn't fully get about this stroy was the agony aunt bit - I think it could have been a more integrated part of the story.
