This was a great book that gave me so much insight into writing Flash Fiction. Flash! was written by one of the professors at the MFA program at my alma mater. If I go back for my MFA then I’ll certainly be a student of his. I also loved that it has examples by some of my professors that I have learned from. It made me miss college a lot. This will definitely be a bedside book from now on, and one I’ll turn to when writing flash fiction, a favorite genre of mine.

Admittedly I just read this cover to cover without doing the exercises because I wanted to learn more about Flash. I was surprised at how long some of the short stories were — a few pages. (I had been imagining them all a few paragraphs or shorter.) The exercises are generally good but some feel a little too proscriptive, as someone who writes mainly speculative fiction. Which is okay. There are plenty of other exercises.
