Imagines a 1920s in which the Ku Klux are actual demons, and a band of Black women are monster hunters. It was a very short and creepy read, putting me in mind of the Bitter Root comic book series.

Oof. The only thing that works about this book is its initial premise. I found the execution woefully disappointing and honestly amateurish. Removed from that premise, it read like a YA novelization of the pilot episode of some Buffy ripoff. By the end it was nearly indistinguishable from parody to me. Not a single dramatic moment felt earned even the slightest bit. I got the sense that the intent was for a fast and visceral pulpy joyride, but the experience was that of reading one of the million attempts to cash in on tropey dime-a-dozen fantasy adventures that came out in the wake of Harry Potter, just with the intriguing KKK conceit draped over it. Really shocked that anyone found this satisfying to read. The pacing was atrocious and every single beat of the plot felt corny and obligatory.  The characters were all incredibly one- dimensional, the character arc of the protagonist on par with the average family adventure movie, complete with the star wars "give in to your hate, come to the dark side" "neverrrrr!" climax. If you told me the author was 14 my only reaction would be "they did good research for their age".

So so good. I enjoy having a nice short book, but in this case I didn't want it to end because I felt like I was just getting to know the world and characters and then it was over!

While the premise of hunting down demonic, racist Ku Kluxes filled my need for some rage and vigilante justice, the execution just wasn’t clicking for me. It was hard to keep characters straight and quite a few felt like they only served to drive the plot instead of stand as their own character.
