Something about this reminds me of A Series of Unfortunate Events

I can see why kids love the series, but this first one honestly took me a little while to get into. I will be reading the second one, to see if it picks up. I'm also curious about the concept of different authors for the books and want to see how consistent it feels. Aside from the title, the book really wasn't scary. There were explosions and lots of skeletons toward the end, but in the book they weren't terrifying. Listening to the audiobook may be a bit scarier, depending on how it's done. Would like to see one or two adults who aren't trying to kill the kids, but I'm just weird like that :)

edited 2022: Listened to the audiobook as a family (6, 8, 13). I probably wouldn't do any younger than 6, but they all enjoyed it. Got some genuine laughs from the adults and made the drive seem pretty quick.

When I got too critical of the lack of realistic anything in this book, I had to remind myself that it wasn't written for grown-ups who like to post on Goodreads. It was written for 6th graders who want a good adventure/fantasy/conspiracy/mystery. Oh right. Then I loved it. The website has all sorts of puzzles and mysterious facts linking to the book, though it took me way too long to solve that airplane game. Anyway, I liked it enough to read the second one, too.

Reminds me of "National Treasure." Fortunately, I really like that movie. The story isn't perfect and there are a couple of holes, but I clearly kids are much more willing to overlook these than I can as an adult. I'm glad that I finally get the appeal.
