There were some bits in here that I really loved. One chapter blew me away. And a dozen sentences felt like love notes just for me.
But overall, either some litfic is just a bit too much up its own ass for my tastes or... This wasn't that good. Maybe both.

Such an interesting book! I originally picked this up because I thought it was a short fantasy read, but it's actually a deep work of literary fiction. To be honest, my head is still swimming (no pun intended) with all the symbolism that I probably missed on this first read through. At times, I felt like I was back in high school English class, trying to decode "Flowers for Algernon". I haven't annotated a book in a while, but a few chapters in I realized I needed to for this book. The unreliability of our unnamed narrator, who may or may not be a mermaid, made everything in this book a secret message. Some general themes that I picked up on:
  • Wanting a love so bad that it twists you/changes who you are
  • Not knowing who you are in the absence of someone else (here, the narrator's father)
  • Duty versus desire

I'm glad I read this for a book club because I think I need to talk about it to unpack what the hell happened but I'm excited to do so. This also should be required reading for anyone who wants to use the phrase "unreliable narrator." Very reminiscent to me of We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, I found myself comparing the main characters super frequently

this is the kind of book that doesn’t have a very strong desire for the reader to understand what’s going on, in a fun way. it leaves room for you to leave in the gaps. it reminds me of an old fairytale, grim and dark and whimsical
