Where do I start? Where do I even start? - I saw this book in a bookshop and the fact that it was on sale should have told me that there is a REASON they couldn't sell this for the actual price. But I was intrigued by the idea of a girl hearing the thoughts of a guy. Before reading Inside the Mind of Gideon Rayburn I thought this was an interesting idea. It might have been - but not in the way it was done in this book.

I don't even know where to start explaining why this is not a good book. I didn't like any of the characters, the plot was shallow and there was no tension to be felt throughout the whole book! The descriptions of people couldn't have been more superficial. The beginning was not too bad but the rest was indeed really bad. The word 'boring' lost all meaning while I read this and it was painful to keep myself from skipping just to get this book done with (I hate leaving things unfinished).

To summarize: This is a book in which nothing happens action-wise and nothing happens in the mind of your average teenage boy. Welcome to the mind of Gideon Rayburn! Be prepared to fall asleep! Warning: Book contains content that is boring to such an extent that it can cause long-term brain damage!

Wow. 1. Her male characters were totally jerks 2. Gideon was sex obsessed and sallow 3. The fact that "the girl" inside his head found his awful personality attractive is sad 4. Their "first time" wasn't romantic and I find it quite disgusting that her little brother was downstairs 5. I get she was trying to convey teenage thoughts but her using "gay" as a negative term was disrespectful. And sadly I ordered the sequel .. Fingers crossed it's better

Held my interest, but was not nearly as fun as I wanted it to be.

Although the premise here tries to make it more, ultimately, this book is really just a boy's coming of age story. The whole told-from-the-perspective-of-the-girl-inside-his-brain thing? Eh, it didn't really work for me. For one thing, despite the endorsements from a couple of (female) authors, who claim that reading this book is just like actually being in a guy's head!, I'm not sure I buy that. Leaving aside the fact that even if you could get into one guy's head, that's not necessarily an accurate picture of what goes on in all guys' heads, what we have here is two women praising the accuracy of another woman's portrayal of something they can have no actual knowledge of. Now, if a male author had endorsed the book, all "This was like reading my own journal from when I was in high school," then maybe I'd buy it. But this is really just what one woman thinks might go on in a teenage boy's head. Which is fine, I guess, but it's not exactly earth-shattering.

SpoilerThe other thing I didn't really care for was the mystery aspect, of who will this girl turn out to be? It was directly referenced as such in the book a few times, which I found very annoying and gimmicky. But I also thought, especially when we find out that it's Molly, that it actually would have provided much more interesting fodder to know that all along. Particularly in respect to the infamous bet. Because if she knew all along what was going on in his head, and his feelings about it all, etc. there could have been some much more interesting commentary from her in there. Plus, maybe there could have been some kind of awesome double dealing, where, knowing he was kind of playing her, she could have played him right back. I just think it could have added a much more interesting layer to the story.

Ultimately, the book had some cute moments, but I didn't think it was anything particularly special. If I want a good teen boy story, I'll stick with my John Green.

A girl accidentally is able to read the mind of a boy at her prep school. Gideon Rayburn is kind of a dork and he’s also the new kid. His roommates are two of the most popular boys at the school and they decide to help him lose his virginity. There’s a bet involved. It’s basically like every teen movie you’ve seen since the late 90s. There’s a lot of American Pie and some She’s All That thrown in for good measure.

I really wasn’t a huge fan. I’m not sure if it’s because I didn’t think Gideon was all that adorable or what. It didn’t help that the girl used gay as an insult a lot. (Speaking as an actual lesbian, no it’s not cute or cool to use gay as a synonym for stupid or lame or ridiculous or whatever.)

I'm actually listening to the audio book of this book. So far so good, although I don't know that I would have bought it (I got it from a friend for free).
