DNF

A bewildering and outdated text from the 1970s that can be summarised in a single sentence: humanity builds civilisations in defiance and fear of death, each person wanting to leave an individual mark on the world while grappling with the duality of having consciousness and the inevitable end of that consciousness. There, I saved you a very dull read.

Becker cites Freud and psychoanalysis as the root of his thesis, a long debunked and ridiculed strain of psychiatry, and so while his proposal is certainly fascinating it has absolutely no merit whatsoever. It certainly wouldn’t win the Pulitzer Prize today.

I would also like to nominate the sentence from page 31, “With anal play the child is already becoming a philosopher of the human condition”, as the worst thing I have ever read in my entire life.
