I really enjoyed this. Got a bit of a feel for the culture of the American South (though likely v fictionalised!)

Lawyer. Mississippi. FBI.

Story : Penn Cage is a famous lawyer, author and also widow and father. After the death of his ill wife, he decides the best thing for his four year old daughter is to spend time with her grandparents in Mississippi. Little does Cage know what will be unleashed during his visit home.

Language: Set in 1990's southern small town Mississippi. Told in first person from Penn's perspective. The early chapters are short but become 10+ page chapters as the book progresses. Thriller, crime, suspense which includes language, alcohol and drug use and sexual situations.

Characters: Ile's characters are all rather one dimensional with little to no character development. Penn Cage is the tough action hero lawyer with brains and brawn, women falling all over him and many men who want him dead.

For the length of this book, 600+ pages, I was expecting more. A lot of the story was drawn out and for me the ending was too short. The chapter pacing threw me and I would have preferred consistent chapter length. Not a bad book for a rainy day crime novel but I probably won't be looking for more Iles books anytime soon.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a page turner and it kept me on the edge of my seat. Good thriller/crime/courtroom drama. There are two reasons I couldn’t give it five stars. The story takes place in Mississippi and deals with a murder committed against a black man in 1968. Racism is an inherent part of the story. Penn Cage, the narrator, makes it clear he isn’t racist in the most white privileged ways you could imagine. This book was released in 2000, I think his POV would be written differently had it come out in 2020. Second, his unrealistic obsession with his high school love often derails both the story and his ability to operate as a human who’s supposedly trying to save lives.

dragged badly in the middle but the pay off made it worthwhile.

A very interesting and gripping thriller. This book did a good job of drawing me into the town of Natchez and making it a character. It did feel a little long towards the end and some of the plot developments were a little contrived. Overall, a good and entertaining book.

I liked this one a lot. I believe I got the rec for this from a list of recommended thrillers I found somewhere. Again, my memory fails me. I forgot to review this one when I finished, so I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting a lot of what I wanted to say. This one was a bit long. I could have done with some editing it down, but overall I really enjoyed it. I'll probably look for more in this series.

I had to force myself to put this book down and go to bed! Really exciting! On my way to get the second book in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. The author takes us on an exciting journey to solve a 30 year old murder of a black man in 1960's Mississippi, and he does it well. Iles is very descriptive of the people and the settings in his novels and it really helps with the immersion while reading. This is a great read and I would recommend it to any fans of fiction.

This is for Grisham lovers who want something new or something much better written. Recommended from my former manager at B&N and by far one of the best recs I've ever gotten.
