Much better than ACOTAR, frankly. Better written with no weird stock phrases that are used over and over again. Not only that but the world building is great, the pacing is fantastic, and there were moments I got actual chills. Rare with this genre!

As an old YA reader in high school, this book made me fall in love with reading again.

I enjoyed the story, and the world is somewhat cool. A lot of the twists were pretty predictable. My biggest issue was the love triangle - it was almost exactly the same dynamic as Twilight. A woman who is very weak but very passionate and principled is loved by two big strong dangerous men who love to fight over the best way to protect her.  We are constantly reminded how small and weak she is, and it seems to be part of what the men appreciate about her so much. The love interest who is a family friend is the more appropriate match, but instead, she falls for the one who appears to be worse for her. I’m over weak women who need to be protected as the protagonist of fantasy stories.

Oh also, Violet’s character is so not believable. She was supposed to absolutely love books and learning, yet when she achieves multiple rare or first-time-ever achievements, does she do any research about them? The professor even talks about reading about the last lightening wielder, but Violet just whines about how she can’t aim rather than, I don’t know, reading up on it a little. Literally the only thing that makes it believable that she used to want to be a scribe is that she talks about the book of fables a bunch, which SO OBVIOUSLY had a plot-driven purpose.
It was annoying.

Also, the sex scenes were cringey and far too long.

There aren’t enough words to detail the experience of this book for me. I slept on this series for so long, thinking it would be another book tok disappointment. I was so wrong. This book has all you could ask for.. fantasy, adventure, war, love, spice, and twists you could never imagine. Make sure you have Iron Flame ready to go as soon as you close the cover of this book.
