As an old YA reader in high school, this book made me fall in love with reading again.

I listened to the audiobook and it was fun! Sure, not that great originality here, but I enjoyed the characters interacting and Violet learning and coming into her power and kicking ass. The plot twists might have been easy to guess beforehand, but they made sense in her story.
I basically wanted to see what the hype was all about and was quite surprised to actually like the book. It is quite loooooong tho.

Sort of wanted to hate this book. It was suggested to me as it had dragons and disability representation! However the line on the back cover claiming it was "Hunger games meets 50 shades" made me think it would be queezy and not my thing.

Despite a slow and not great start
Violet is bratty and acts about 12 for the first 100+ pages, and despite supposedly being quite clever doesn't seem to be. This does get a little better
and many of the secondary characters feeling quite 1d, once the dragons arrive it massively improves. I won't say she can write dragons better than humans but sometimes they did seem to have a wee bit more personality quirks! Perhaps she also settled into writing about this point as you also got a greater sense of some of the secondary characters too about 200 pages in.

The book sex is not intrusive it maintains the usually pretty cringe aspects of most writing about sex, without being more than about 20 pages in total. I'm not sure why it has a big reputation as a smutty book tbh.

Plot wise, a few nice twists and clearly set up for the next in the series, but nothing revolutionary. A good winter comfort read with tea and biscuits. Don't expect something dazzling.

I'm just going to spoiler tag the following because it's questions and musings and I don't want to spoil accidentally...
Why is it that riders are the ones that are considered needing to be culled out? Why is it that they are weak when they are JUST learning how to ride a dragon and they fall to their deaths. Like bro, they've never been on an -actual- dragon before. Why is it that the riders are weak and not the dragons for letting their riders die? The dragons can't protect their riders appropriately and the riders are considered weak while still in the learning stages?
Curious as to how they are going to explain Andarna's change in physicality since humans don't seem to know that feather tails are babies and they think that they are a totally different breed.
Why can't unbonded dragons fight alone or in unbonded riots?

How and when did Violet become the best knife thrower? When did she practice this while training to become a scribe and while she only had 6 months to prep for being a rider?

If marked ones aren't allowed to meet or gather in groups of 3+ how did Xaden manage to get a full squad of marked ones together for War Games?? That alone should have been a tip off/red flag that something was going wrong, that higher ups allowed that.

Plot twists were easy to spot, easy to tell which characters had 'plot armor'. Narrators were fantastic for the audiobook, though I'm confused WHY we needed two of them when the POV switch is literally in the last couple of chapters and doesn't last long...

Absolutely loved this book. you find yourself completely immersed in this fantastical world, the world building and plot is beautifully constructed, the characters are loveable and thought out, the balance of action and romance is beautifully done. you will be wishing you had a dragon by the end of this book.
