none of the characters are likable except the narrator Nelly, and maybe on a good day cathy linton. but heathcliff is literally the worst??? and actually evil??? and why do they hate children so much. also, they need to get out of the holler and stop marrying their cousins

this was such a slog to get through. this writing style is both so boring and so overly dramatic. just about every character was detestable and when they weren't, they were in love with someone so obviously detestable that i was annoyed and frustrated nearly the entire time i read this. i don't understand why anyone loved catherine sr. as much as they did when she was overtly manipulative, selfish, and instigative.
her dying literally halfway through the book seemingly in childbirth when there was not a single hint to her being pregnant, even when she had a doctor checking in on her constantly confused me so much and caught me by such surprise that i had to reread the passage a few times just to be sure i read it right. it just made no sense how that even happened without anyone knowing or even suspecting she was pregnant. especially when it starts out that she's faking her illness initially for attention and to manipulate everyone to give her what she wants.
i did not understand catherine sr. and heathcliffe's obsession with each other when it seemed that they rarely even had any time together between being forbidden to speak to/spend time with each other, being mad at one another, or heathcliffe just straight up disappearing for years.
heathcliffe's obsession with her made even less sense to me after she died and was honestly so disturbing. he dug up her grave!!! what do you even mean!!! his behaviour throughout this entire book was so revolting and violating.
i also could not understand why catherine jr. liked linton so much when he was just a big, whiny, manipulative baby! like what even is the attraction there at all? all these characters were so unreasonably attached and unwaveringly loyal to the most insufferable people and i just didn't get it. it was truly so frustrating. also, heathcliffe holding such a crazy and intense grudge against the people who wronged him for their and his entire life, so much so that he holds the grudge against their ENTIRE bloodline and makes it his life's mission to ruin all of their lives and disrespect their wishes in even death is WILD. what a fucking loser. also, how are you going to have whole ass characters with dialogue that is so indecipherable and incomprehensible to any person on earth that you have to have an actual glossary to translate it for the reader??? that isn't a language, by the way! the book is bad, argue with the wall.

A book about terrible people doing terrible things in a terrible environment that breeds more terrible people. You truly don't root for a single person in this novel and despite how emotional some scenes can be (/pos)- you never really know any of these characters when everything is account of an account. Unreliable narrators aside- you can't help feel bad for Catherine and Heathcliff... for like a hot minute and then you snap back to reality. Are they victims of circumstance? Sure, but the cycle of abuse continues... which is admittedly one of the themes, but by the end of the novel you're just like damn what a waste of two lives. This is a thought-provoking novel, but you won't feel good at any point of this novel. It's pretty to read, but it can get slow and sometimes just plain confusing (or redundant).

i wish i could articulate why i liked this so much better but it was a super cathartic read. the prose was beautiful and the characterisation was really good in my opinion. i find it infinitely more interesting and satisfying to read about flawed characters than mary sues or people with shortcomings that get no worse than “i love too hard😔” so this was really enjoyable. i think heathcliffs ethnicity was worked really well into the book and gave a lot of insight into his character. i went into this pretty much blind but expecting it to be more of a romance than it was but i was pleasantly surprised! i think this is a gothic novel, and if that is the case, it was a very good example of one! i might be slightly biased since it’s set in yorkshire (my homeland) and it feels somewhat nostalgic despite being written centuries before i was born.

“In every cloud, in every tree-filling the air at night, and caught by glimpses in very object, by day I am surrounded by her image! The most ordinary faces of men and women-my own features-mock me with a resemblance. The entire would is a dreadful collection if memoranda that she did exist, and I have lost her.”
I cannot put into words how much this novel meant to me. It was beautiful, it was heart wrenching, it was horrifying, it was a book I hope to read 1000 times over.  I would highly, highly recommend for any fans of gothic literature, or those interested in themes of love, obsession, and vengance. I will say that this is not a romance, but love is a driving factor for almost everything. Once again, I cannot stress how much I loved Wuthering Heights.

Switching to the audiobook improved my experience with the book overall, but in the end all I feel is a relief to have finished.  Despite having a certain understanding of the characters, that did not make me feel for them.
I honestly pumped my fist when Heathcliff finally died.
However I did like Nelly (I enjoy gossipy characters), and towards the end of their character arcs Isabella and Catherine Linton also grew on me.  But not enough to redeem the time I spent reading this novel.

Wuthering Heights is a story of two people who are deeply in love, but who are also deeply flawed.
Heathcliff is a wild and untamed man, while Catherine is a proud, spoiled and headstrong woman. Their love is passionate and intense, but it is also destructive. They both make mistakes, and they both suffer as a result.

I loved the locations, the moors are a place of beauty and danger, and they reflect the tumultuous relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine.

The characters in Wuthering Heights are not saints or heroes, but real people who make mistakes and suffer the consequences.
I found myself rooting for Heathcliff and Catherine, even though I knew that they were both capable of great cruelty. However, I think that this is part of what makes the story so compelling. It is a reminder that even the most flawed people are capable of love, and that even the most destructive love can be beautiful.

I was surprised when Heathcliff, instead of protecting what Catherine left, bested her. I thought that he would be more kind and forgiving, but he was instead consumed by his own rage and bitterness. This shows that even the most passionate love can be turned to hate.

My favourite scene in Wuthering Heights is when Heathcliff runs away and Catherine says that their souls are the same. This scene shows the depth of their love, even though they are unable to be together. It is a reminder that even when love is impossible, it can still be a powerful force in our lives.

I learned a lot from Wuthering Heights:
I learned that love is a powerful force, but it can also be destructive, and that even the most destructive love can be beautiful.

Wuthering Heights is a challenging and heart-breaking book, but it is also a beautiful and unforgettable one. It is a story that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it.

He's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.
