This was absolutely gross, twisted but also a great time.

I will definitely pick up more of his work.

I love this author and the way he approaches horror. Didn’t love all the stories in this one but most were good and I flew threw them and enjoyed them.

This unsettling collection of some of Junji Ito’s earlier works is one that is select in just the right ways to capture what makes Ito’s storytelling so disturbing and lingering.

Throughout reading this collection, I found myself becoming increasingly upset. I put the book down at several points out of a need to digest the implications of the stories being told. Ito is just so masterful at crafting stories that exist beyond their margins in the minds of readers. This is not an easy collection. It’s gory and brutal — both visually and in the writing. Several panels are truly horrific and chilling. It’s apparent from this early work why Ito became such a prolific manga creator.

As far as standout works in this collection, I’d have to go with the two final world — “Bullied” and the titular “Deserter”. They are both psychologically and visually disturbing on almost too many levels. I felt a true chill run through me with the final pages of both stories. As always, Ito is a master of the “page turn”. I know something awful is going to be around the corner and yet I want to turn it anyway.

Definitely worth reading! It’s full of unsettling classics for long-time fans and full of horrific delights for new fans~
