One of the best ones I have read in recent years! I had read a lot about Sara J. Maas and this was the first one I read from her. Did.Not.Disappoint. Amazing.

this book had some extremely dark moments, but i realized that this is a big difference between adult and ya. deeper emotions and harsher truths are able to be examined. i found i really enjoyed this fact, especially mixed with the thrill of a fantasy novel.
I dont know how maas continues to create such expansive and different universes. this one was so unique and built in a beautiful hierarchy. the characters were engaging and complex, with plenty of Maas infamous plot twists to keep me constantly guessing.
*Reread 2022*
I read the book instead of listened to the audiobook this time. I still find myself waiting for Danika and the Pack to somehow return, theirs deaths still shockingly impactful and difficult to accept. There were a lot of things I forgot happened in this story; hunts betrayal and lehabas death for instance. The mix of mystery and fantasy for me is an intriguing one and done well here. Maas' focus on mental health in her books is glaringly obvious in this book, with major themes of depression and trauma, she does a spectacular job entwining these without letting it overtake the plot. The 100 pages had me shocked, even the second time reading the book. I've heard recently that this is actually a sort of Zootopia retelling, and I can see the similarities now, actually quite enjoyed it truth be told. The sheer amount of various species in this book is astounding, and could very easily fall flat, but was executed wonderfully. I'm so excited to finally start the second book; I have a few theories: fury is the underking or viper queens daughter, hunt (per jesiba in the epilogue) is the underkings son, the royal line ends with ruhn because somehow Bryce will take the throne, and jesiba left the witches because they were complacent with the asteri rule while she wanted to fight against it. There were also A LOT of allusions to ACOTAR and im hoping that eventually we will get some kind of crossover, or at least confirmation that one of the world's from the rift is that one.
