In school, the arrival of Europeans was always the beginning of the story. This novel subverts that pattern, giving a matter-of-fact look at the culture of one island people through the eyes of two children. It's sweet and emotionally complex and ultimately sad because we know the unwritten ending to this story. The character-driven story was a new experience for my 11-year-old.

A brief but fascinating story. I really liked seeing the world from alternating perspectives of the brother and sister.
