I think you really need to know the characters/setting already to care about what's happening

Eve of Destruction is the 2nd book in the Marked series starring the fearless, badass heroine Eve Hollis. This book pretty much picked up where Eve of Darkness left off. So much happens in this book!

Eve is going on her Marked training field trip with the archangel Raguel and some other new marks. They have their training at an abandoned military base where things take a turn for the worst. Someone in their group is a traitor and is slowly killing off the marks in the group, but who...

Along the way Cain makes a deal with a seraphim and accends into an archangel while Gardara is in the belly of the beast & no one knows weather if he's dead or alive. Eve will do anything she can to prove that Gardara is alive.

I really enjoyed this book and flew through it. It's fast paced and there's never a dull moment or lack of storyline.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a tad different from the first and gave me more mystery vibes which I enjoyed. Loved the characters and the personalities given to each one. Excited for the last one!

Oh my...What a book...The triangle is on fire!!!...
I really enjoyed Eve and Reed..I really like them together..He loosens her up and she grounds him and makes him feel...Alec took a hell of a turn in this book, not to mention the ending which left with a huge WTF?...I enjoyed every turn in the storyline...the questions..Eve's progress..She is really brilliant and a natural Mark, but I like the fact she doesn't see it from the beginning. However,in the next book, after some hunts I assume and expect she will gain confidence and that will be an awesome thing to see.
Something tells me that she will end up with Cain but I can't help but hope for my guy...
But the real question is..Is Eve so valuable just because Cain loves her?Or is there much more to her than that??..Both satan and Raquel are really really focused on using her but to do what?..Personally,I don't think it's just her relationship with Cain or Reed for that matter..
There is something else about Eve..Hope I'm right..

I thought the first book in this series was a fun romp, but this one was sometimes a struggle to get through. I'm not sure if the writing was less peppy--though I certainly missed the presence of Eve's mom and Eve's interactions with Alec--, if the worldbuilding was less novel and therefore less engaging, or if the philosophical precepts behind the worldbuilding just bothered me more (sex is morally bad, even though the archangels do it, even though they don't need/want to, wait what?; violence in the form of ruthlessly massacring Infernals is morally good; black is bad, white/gold is good). It was probably a combination of all of the above, really.

I did make it to the end, though, and I'm not hesitant about DNFing a book that bores or annoys me, and I'm likely to read the 3rd in the series just to find out whether Eve ends up with Cain (who I like), Abel (not so much), neither or both. I just wish I had enjoyed this one a bit more than I did.

I have a love-hate feeling with the triumvirate of Alec Cain - Eve Hollis - Reed Abel. I love how strong their souls were connected as if all three of them were one unit. Just like Eve, I love both men. How can any female resist Cain and Abel? But I hate that because Eve loves one man and covets the other, it hurts both men, or all three of them in the process. They were all suffering in their own ways because of their strong bonds with each other. Sometimes it's so complicated that I think a ménage a trois is inevitable. But will the brothers willingly share without killing the other?
There is the whole business of demon slaying and vanquishing but for me, this is only secondary. What kept me hooked in the Marked Series was the Cain-Eve-Abel story and where it will lead. So, on to the 3rd book, Eve of Chaos.

This story starts off pretty much right where the last one left off...or rather where the first book began. Eve has been brought back basically from the dead and now she's in training. She does seem to have an advantage over her fellow trainees, though. One, she has already spent time in the field, so to speak and two, she has Cain, the ultimate Mark, as her mentor. This leaves her open to jealousy amongst her peers and tends to make her stand out.

Gadara is up in the training rotation just as it's time for Eve to train, a coincidence that is not at all lost of either of the brothers. The training group is headed to an old military base, while Cain is being sent to investigate a new breed of infernal that has been killing Marks. This mark is like nothing they have seen before and it grows with each kill. The new recruits are supposed to be in training, but it's clear very early on that there is more going on when people start to die.

While Eve and Cain are separated Abel steps in and gets closer to her through their bond as Mark and Handler. The three of them from a triumvirate during a moment of passion. This bonds them even further and I believe that this is something that was set in motion from the time that Cain fell in love with Eve all those years ago. A higher power has been pushing these pieces into place for years. Eve and Abel get much closer in this book and as much as I love Cain, I have to admit that I didn't hate it!

Eve is still in the dark about what Cain's long range plans are. It's clear that while he is torn between his love for her and wanting to head his own firm, I honestly don't think he would choose her in the end if it came down to it. When Gadara disappears, big changes are in store for Cain when heaven needs a new Archangel to take his place, but where does this leave Eve?

This story was a little more drawn out than the last one, but I didn't enjoy it any less. I am such a fan of Ms. Day's writing that it could have been 600 pages and I still would have enjoyed it. There was a lot more action in this one. We did meet a few new characters in this book that will play a bigger part in the next book, not the least of which was Samael.

If you liked the first book then you are definitely going to want to pick this one up. As with the first one, this continues with the somewhat biblical theme, make no mistake though, this is not a Bible story. There are more steamy love scenes, etc... It's very much an adult read.

Evangeline Hollis has been forced to accept God's existence in her life. How could she not after sleeping with both Cain and Abel and seeing an archangel up close and personal? She still doesn't trust that God's system is flawless however, and as her Mark training gets underway, she's more certain than ever that something is just not right. Until she can find out what it is though, she needs to concentrate on staying alive, and from keeping Cain and Abel from killing each other again, and again.

Who?
Evangeline Harris: A Mark who works for Raguel's firm
Alec Cain: The biblical Cain, a demon hunter trying to make up for his sins
Reed Abel: The biblical Abel, trying to make himself more in God's eyes, and prove himself
Raguel: The leader of the North American demon hunters, an archangel

What?
After being attacked by a dragon at a sporting event, Alec and Reed will hardly let Eve out of their sight. It's finally time for Eve's Mark group to begin training, and on top of everything else, she has to learn to play nice with the other people in her class. When her Novium kicks in during a training exercise, all hell begins to break loose at the abandoned military base where Raguel is conducting the training. Then suddenly, Raguel is gone. With Raguel gone and Alec chasing the Alpha Werewolf who sent the dragon, Eve's only choice is to lean on Reed, which might be more dangerous than the infernals they are hunting.

Where?
California

When?
Contemporary

Why?
There is a new demon loose in the world, and until it has been classified and its weaknesses found, the brothers are being overprotective. The fact that Eve happens to be Alec's girlfriend is not making the rest of her class warm up to her any sooner. Alec is hunting the Alpha because it is his next target, but more because he is a threat to Eve.

Favorite Parts:
Like the first book in the series, I couldn't put this one down. The action scenes are well written and rather intense at times. Eve is still as headstrong, and she will not give up on the feeling that something isn't right in the firm despite Reed's attempt to calm her worries. Like Eve, I knew something wasn't right, but I couldn't figure out who the culprit was until it was revealed at the end. There really is no way anyone could figure it out without guessing. I love when I book can surprise me. However, my favorite part of the book was in the last eight pages: the way Eve decides to handle Reed and Alec.

A few of my favorite quotes from the book:
Archangels with cell phones, such was her life. (p. 106)

Who would have thought God would tie two such disparate concepts as killing and loving into the same event? Then again, Eve had always thought the Almighty had a sick sense of humor. (p. 111)

A flock of seagulls joined them, screeching to the sky and the God who allowed such things to happen to those who served him. (p. 161)

"Could be. Toss a little aphrodisiac in the food, get everyone so horny they're too busy getting off to fight back, and wham! Take 'em out. Brilliant Infernal strategy." (p. 269)

In full wolf form, he would have turned instataneously to ash. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return. In half-form, the process took longer and was sometimes incomplete, leading to semiburned bodies that mortals attributed to spontaneous combustion. (p. 333)

Least Favorite Parts:
My problems with this book were the same as with the first one, and I will reiterate again, I could NOT put this book down. The point of view shifts were confusing to me, because they happened so irregularly. I wish there were more, because the chapters from Reed and Alec's mindset are very interesting. The sex seemed gratuitous at times, though not always. Minor quibble, there were a couple of descriptions that had almost the same wording from the first book. Mostly I caught this because I liked the description so much the first time around that it stuck out the second time.

Recommend?
Yes.

To whom?
Adults who are into urban fantasy and strong female characters. People who want to fall in love with the "bad boy". There is some graphic sex and language, so I would not recommend to anyone who would be offended, to children or to teens.
