Trick Baby is one of those books that I got through but it didn’t really get through me. While I could feel both sympathy and empathy for the lead character’s upbringing and struggles I had no interest in his hustling, in his fast talking ways or his sexism. Realistically this was never likely to be a book for me and had it not been for the reading challenge I might never have picked it up. What was interesting was to compare the experience of being light skinned Black man for White Folks, the protagonist in this book, with that of the protagonist in Incognegro. White Folks clearly felt alienated from the Black community, certainly he suffered teasing and discrimination for not being “dark enough” yet found that could work to his advantage in his criminal activities.
