Super informative. I learned more about Chinese American history from this book than even from 20+ years of talking with my own family. Nonfiction but it's really interesting. My family has 0 records so it's stunning and impressive how much information the author could gather.
Graphic: Racial slurs and Racism
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Misogyny, and War

Very repetitive and didn't really capture my attention. The family history is really cool and interesting but I found the chapters to be very repetitive of each other and didn't really progress into the history (made it half way through chapter 7).
Graphic: Adult/minor relationship, Confinement, Death, Genocide, Hate crime, Misogyny, Racial slurs, Racism, Sexism, Slavery, Torture, Forced institutionalization, Trafficking, Grief, Death of parent, Pregnancy, Cultural appropriation, Abandonment, Colonisation, Classism, and Deportation

It felt like it was dragging on and on, and although it was interesting to read about her ancestors, I was a bit surprised and dismayed to find that I was only 28% of the way through. I expect that the depth of detail was there because she'd found that much information and wanted to honor those in her family who had helped her and who cared about what she had learned. Maybe I'll resume someday...
