This series is excellent. I would definitely suggest it to those young enough to appreciate it; I believe this series withstands the test of time only with a healthy dose of nostalgia and some quiet sighs at flatulent jokes. That being said, the characters are always wonderful, even with Butler's overly macho one-liners and Mulch's crass humor. How can anyone not fall in love with Artemis' cold demeanor, or Holly's stubborn fire? And Foaly, with his tin foil hat? The series blends magic and science in a way that *is* a little ridiculous...but the best kind. It is a very good transition series for those too old for How to Train Your Dragon (if such a thing is even possible) but too young to read the fourth and on books for Harry Potter. Eoin Colfer has other really good books as well (Airman is a personal favourite).
Speaking of personal favourites, the best books in the series, hands down, are 1, 3, and 6. And 8 if I'm hard pressed, though I think Colfer really didn't do Artemis' character enough justice, especially since he makes a point to talk about Fowl's exemplary piloting abilities in book 5. (mild spoiler, I apologise, but too mild for me to mark it a spoiler.)
