This was perfect. When the author advertised this book/series as a good fit for Mass Effect fans, she wasn't kidding. The MMC's description sounds like a less extreme version of a predator alien. His race has left behind tribal behaviors and formed a coalition with other interplanetary races that have overcome their primitive behaviors. Except in matters of mating, naturally. Our girl's love interest finds himself head-over and his instincts aren't taking slow down for an answer.

Despite their early, situationally driven sexual encounter, this was pretty slow burn for a standalone. The sexual tension is high from early on with plenty of close calls, but they don't work things out and truly get together until the final few chapters.

I loved the feel-good approach to the alien coalition. There's bad in the universe, but, like Mass Effect, the races are pulling together to fight evil and protect the younger, unawakened races. It's a very optimistic worldview that keeps the very dark prospect of intergalactic sex trafficking from overwhelming the lighthearted feel of the book. I was able to read through this in a day without feeling too frought about the obvious torture the captured humans had been facing.

I will now be running, not walking, to read the rest of this series.

This is now one of my favorite alien romances! I love the characters, the world-building, and the sweet slow-burn. This is a very well-written story with a unique twist on the alien abduction trope. I love all the alien races we get to know, too.

I really liked how Olivia has a purpose after her abduction and she's not isolated. She's able to make a life and friends. The side characters are great in this. The romance builds over time.

I do wish that Atarian had communicated more about what convergence is directly rather than Olivia having to piece it together herself, but it did make for a mystery and build the tension.

I cannot wait to read the rest of the series. My main criticism of the book would be that reading Olivia's POV in first person and then jumping to third person for other POVs was a little jarring at first. I personally prefer third person, so I wish it had all been written that way. I still enjoyed the book. It just took some getting used to.

Content warnings for sexu@l trafficking of humans from minors to adults. The heroine is never harmed, but the mission she is involved in deals with this issue.
