*I received an eARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

College in certainly a time of making mistakes and growth and making more mistakes. And this book is deeply representative of that. The writing was straightforward, descriptive, and the dialogue felt so accurate to the voices on young adults in college. I felt transported back to undergrad in many scenes, particularly anything related to the RA experience as I was one myself.

Millie and Kennedy were standout characters. I loved Millie's determination, and reading her stream of consciousness as she figures things about herself out. Kennedy was a character that I felt I had met many times before, the person you know is not quite okay and wish you had pulled into your friend group. As for Agatha, I'm not sure if she's intended to be the antagonist of the book but she certainly is in my mind!

My only difficulties with this book were that the build-up was very slow. I felt like I was reading about mundane, unconnected events for about the first 40% of the book. However the payoff with everything connecting in the end was well worth it. A tense, but great, read!

Kiley Reid has masterfully depicted the college experience - with a complex web of class, race, petty behavior, and morally questionable decisions, COME & GET IT explores how we treat others and the ways our choices can haunt us. Reid delivers all of this with an iconic wit, humor, and brevity that will leave readers invested in every character and questioning every thought.

I enjoyed Such a Fun Age and was excited to get to Come and Get It, and was blown away by how fun and compelling this book was! Reid shows off her superb ability to render characters in such believable, relatable ways. The dialogue was a real strength in this book, it felt very natural and like it was coming from real, distinct people. It’s one thing to get me to cry while reading a book, but a completely different thing altogether to get me to laugh, and this book did that consistently. So many little quips and situations in this novel made me laugh, Reid reveals something so silly and petty about the undergrad dorm experience while also showing how quickly these things can escalate into very real problems. This is a great book for people who love character driven stories, funny dialogue, and books that subtly pick apart the complexities of class privilege.

Thank you to Penguin Group (Putnam) and NetGalley for the advanced copy!

Come and Get It, a novel set largely at the University of Arkansas, has a lot going on! I loved Reid’s Such a Fun Age, so my expectations were really high for this. At first, the structure and the number of characters had me worried. I wasn’t sure if I was following that well, and I had a hard time feeling connected to the characters. But of course I should have trusted Reid, because by about halfway through, I was hooked, reading late into the night and starting up again in the morning. There were times where I found it difficult to believe that certain characters would actually make the choices they were making, but I was able to put that aside and enjoy (or, feel the tension of? certainly feel invested in!) the story. Now that I’ve finished it I am eager for a friend to read it so we can discuss it. And once again, I can’t wait to see what Reid writes next. Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam Books for providing a digital review copy.
