Honestly, I really liked this book. I finished it in about 5 days, and I’m very excited to start the next one. Definitely a book that got a lot of gasps from me towards the end. The world it is set in seems so interesting that I already see myself falling in love with it. Although I was a little late to reading this series, I don’t doubt that it will live up to the hype.

A lot of the plot of this book is similar to Harry Potter. Main character has powers she didn't know about and gets taken somewhere to train in these powers to face this impending danger. There are few differences, but it's your typical fantasy plot. The groups of characters in the book and the powers they have are unique as well, much like Harry Potter houses. There are plot holes that could've have ended the book much sooner, but overall the book is well structured and written.

I watched the TV show before reading (well listening to be more accurate) to the book. I enjoyed the book more than I do most YA fantasy, which I by and large find disappointing, but I might have liked it more if I weren't comparing it to the TV show which I LOVED. Now having read the book I like all of the changes they made to the plot for the show (even discounting that they blended in a whole separate book series). So it's hard for me to review the book because I can't not compare it.

The narrator for the audiobook was mostly good. <Spoiler> She gave the Darkling a voice that sounded so clearly evil and untrustworthy that it was a hard sell to believe that we were supposed to not know that hes up to no good until half-way through. </Spoiler> But otherwise, I liked her performance.

My review is probably biased because I watched the show first and really loved it, but I really loved this book. I’m so enthralled by Ravka and the Grisha and can’t wait to see how Alina’s journey will progress over the next two books. Obviously ... a big part of my love for this book is my love for all-powerful, ancient, impossibly handsome, mean men.
The Darkling is a true villain in the way that his actions are objectively evil, and yet I really can see his own justification. I can understand why he does what he does, without feeling sympathy for him.
Also I want him to kiss me.

I loved this world so much. I read the six of crows duology before, and even though I loved those books much more in terms of plot and characters, this book made me understand  the world much better in terms of magic and politics. I liked the characters but thought that they were pretty flat, especially if I compare them to the characters in soc.
my favorite character was Genya. I definitely did not think the same of her in soc. She reminded me a lot of Gloria Delgado from Modern Family; beautiful and knows it, sharp tongue and giddy/amused. Though I just read the bonus material.... I am pretty excited to find out what exactly is going on. I hope that she remains the lovable character she’s been for me so far.
