The sequel did not disappoint. This is turning out to be my most favourite fae book series so far. I really liked how the author didn't rush the story like most people do. It was well fleshed out, and very well written.

Elora continues to help Prince Brannick with the High King's trials. However, her presence is becoming known to many forces.

This sequel tops the first with its twists and turns. I love the magic of the faerie realm and how no bargain or vow is ever completely straightforward. We also deal more with Elora's grief and survival in the Bitter Thorn court.

The end was not what I expected, and yet I expected it. I am so excited to see how the story progresses in the next installment.

Elora is having a hard time connecting with her emotions the longer she spends in Faerie. The first trial has been completed with two trials to come: a speech and a tournament. Queen Alessandra is regaining more memories of her bargain with Prince Brannick and is using her control over him against him. Elora goes to Queen Alessandra and makes a bargain to gain the knowledge of how to break the prince’s bargain.

The first third of the book moves quite slowly and Elora faces failure after failure but it picks up especially in the final third, almost to its detriment. Plot points start coming in quick and character development stretches thinner. The ending is not at all surprising; readers should have known it was coming the moment the mechanic was introduced in the first book.

The first of three competitions complete, Elora and the court of Bitter Thorn await the start of the next competition. Having been in Faerie for some time now, Elora is increasingly having trouble with her emotions and a diminishing desire to return to the mortal world. Facing new enemies and old Elora and Brannick continue to grow closer, slowing creating cracks in Brannick's hard exterior.

"The Court of Bitter Thorn" is a good middle entry into this series, but it falls prey to some drawbacks with sequels. Being the second book, most of the characters are established already, as have the major conflict in the story. So for the first third of the book the pace of the story feels slow, but thankfully after some character development the story picks up and it became harder to put the book down as I raced towards the end wanting to know what would happen next. I will definitely come back for the conclusion of this story.
