Fantastic book. I started reading it to my baby as a bedtime story (she is not old enough to mind the darker plot points) but it was so good that I stopped reading it out loud and just devoured it. Amazing characters. The best kind of humour and tone. There’s a top notch dog. Amazing.

This is such a fast and absorbing read. I love how the author blends fairy tale elements to make a new original story. This book feels like a grown-up version of the princess stories I loved as a child (books by Gail Carson Levine & Shannon Hale), and it will stick with me for some time to come.

Read for a book club, and was so happy to get sucked in to the story when reading has been hard for me this year. The side characters were the best part, along with Kingfisher's penchant for exploring the mundane everyday parts of life in her fantasy stories.

Audiobook was GREAT, Amara Jasper did a fantastic job.

While it took me a while to get into the groove of this book and its main character’s voice, I found this to be a very satisfying listen. The darkly cozy vibes I’d heard about were enjoyable, as was the rather classic hero’s journey structure. I appreciated the illustration of how cyclical abuse can be and the experience of this under patriarchy. Wanted it to go a lil deeper and explain itself a lil less, but didn’t ruin it! Overall, an enjoyable journey.

I really enjoyed the characters and plot of this one. I liked how a pretty vague/generic fantasy world somehow managed to be pretty complex and easy to imagine. It doesn't score higher because sometimes I had to reread paragraphs because certain sentences were worded in a confusing manner

A dark fairytale. It didn't grab my attention at first, but the more I kept reading, the more I found myself caring about the characters; they have somehow found a way into my heart and I want to continue following them, especially the two old women. A solid 4 star.
