This is the 10-year anniversary edition that has a thoughtful, detailed updated opening, but the main body is essentially the same. I think listening to the facts from 10+ years ago while knowing where we are today nails home the point that we MUST act. And act harder.
I’m someone who completely fell for the messaging of the “war on drugs” and how police only arrest “the bad guys” growing up, and am ashamed I never thought to get more facts about it until recently.
This is one of the most important and informative books I’ve read during my anti racism education.

An excellent introduction to racial inequity in the American criminal "justice" system. As a 90's baby who grew up in a very white suburban town, I knew basically nothing about the War on Drugs and how aggressively it targeted poor communities of color and fueled the militarization of police departments. This was an eye-opening account of horrifying aspects of our country (as it exists today and how we got here) that I know little about. I'm kicking myself for not reading this book sooner. If you're looking to dive into racial justice, this book is a great place to start, and references many other works that I've flagged to look into.

I've read some complaints that this book is repetitive and, honestly, it is. But because I often went a few days before picking it back up to read the next chapter, I appreciated the repetitiveness, which helped me remember what had already been covered, draw connections, and follow along.
