it is so disappointing to be reading this book and come across racist comments. it ruins any enjoyment i was feeling.

aside from that, this was a less enjoyable Christie because I was able to guess the plot in the first 30ish pages. however, i really enjoyed the last 20 pages where we get the interactions between Poirot and Jacqueline after the murderer is revealed.

"See you, I recognize my own weaknesses. It has been said of me that I like to make a case difficult. This solution that you put to me - it is too simple, too easy. I cannot feel that it really happened. And yet, that may be the sheer prejudice on my part."
I had a lot of fun reading this book. I also really enjoyed the mystery aspect of it. I watched the 1978 movie before reading the book, and while I enjoyed both, I wasn't expecting the movie to be so close to the book. (I only accept the 1978 movie, especially since I refuse to watch the 2020 version.) There were a lot of moments while reading where I was like "I remember that!"

I enjoy classic mysteries like this. Interesting characters, crimes upon crimes, a resolution that's hard to see coming, and a less melodramatic reveal than sometimes comes with Poirot stories (which I prefer). The characters aren't particularly deep and Christie leans harder on stereotypes than modern readers enjoy, but the plot is worth a read.

Racism and sexism typical of this era in Western culture (early 20th century).

This one is on par with my other favorites from Christie. The characters were pretty fun, but I did have a hard time keeping things straight at the beginning (as per usual for me), but nevertheless enjoyed it once I remembered who was who. It's a fun read and will have you second guessing yourself. I did enjoy the reveal and depressing ending.
