I didn't have any expectations of the book going into it, though after reading it, it wasn't great I'd say it was just ok. Although I typically enjoy reading Irvine Welsh novels, this particular one was difficult for me to start and actually want to finish. I felt no connection with the characters, so I found it very hard to be sympathetic towards what they were going through.

This book was absolutely riveting - I needed to know what happened next. Dorian Grey for the modern age. Big recommend.

if you took mamma mia, the picture of dorian gray and jekyll and hyde then threw them all together in Edinburgh this is what you’d get and it’s amazing

Och. His weakest novel. Murders happen just so that the characters have something to do, and overall it's just kind of sloppy.

Irvine Welsh makes me tired. Maybe that's his intention. Relentless substance abuse, redeeming qualities in any character almost impossible to find, one of the most revolting sex scenes I've ever encountered anywhere (rivals the toilet in "Trainspotting" for gag-inducement) that is now seared into my brain. He does know how to use words, I'll give him that. But I'm not his ideal reader, and I'm done. I just hope I can get over him and actually enjoy Edinborough if I get there some day.

A disaster - Welsh details a rivalry between two chefs. This would have been two stars, however there is one scene of a failed tryst which is amazing - Welsh at his powers and that deserved an extra star.
