Like when Spotify plays a song you haven’t heard since childhood, and it reminds you who you are. Like “oh yeah, I’m a person who knows all the words to Will Smith’s ‘Wild Wild West’”.

On the one hand I loved this book. The characters seem human and you are rooting for their success and happiness, regardless of if they end up together, from the get-go. It’s interesting, and modern and just great to read.

I have a few qualms with this book however. On a personal level, I think I have to feel that it seems realistic to wholly root for a good romance. Audre is apparently twelve but speaks like a 23 year old millennial, both of them text and flirt the way characters do in the app Episode, and the character development, while satisfying, felt like it needed more groundwork to explain WHY they made the final decisions they did.

Still would recommend.

Great protagonists, amazing cast of side characters, fun book. The one thing is that the characters are both very traumatized by events they experienced together and in their childhoods and they felt too raw, even at the beginning, to belong together again. It would have worked so much better without a happy ending.  Also, some dialogue really takes you out of the book, especially between the main characters, just feels a bit cliché. Audre is the best character for sure.

This was a sweet, well-written read that you can tell was written with a lot of love. There was a good balance of light and shade, with bits of well-done humour and the main characters were so compelling (although a lot of the supporting characters were kind of written off as one-dimensional stereotypes imo). It didn’t completely blow me away the way I was expecting it to, considering the amount of people I’ve heard raving about it, but maybe my expectations were too high.
