This is an amazing book! I’m a grandson of Dutch immigrants affected by WWII directly. I’ve always been interested in that time period and this comic memoir definitely shows the raw emotion those times evoked for many.

Why haven't I read this sooner? Fantastic art and story telling, the relationship with the father and the brutal honesty of the characters and their personalities, I felt like I was soaking up the story. Now to read part two.

Beautifully illustrated, packed with emotional moments and harrowing details. The contrast between the home life that the Spiegelman family tries to maintain and the atrocities going on around them are not dampened by the representation of them as mice. The symbolism that is used with the pig masks is incredibly effective at showing the internal psyche as their life teeters on a knife's edge. A haunting must-read that is an example of what graphic novels can achieve.

This book has been on my list for a very long time and I am so glad to finally have the chance to read it. A so important story of survival and initial luck during the Holocaust. I'm both dreading and looking forward to book two.
